Simple Tips for Winterizing Your Home

House surrounded by trees covered in snow.

Stay warm and safe this winter by winterizing your home before the cold air makes its way to your area. With the following tips below for winterizing your home, you will make it through the winter with little to no issues and stay warm and toasty all winter long!

The plumbing system and pipes are often the most common part of your home to feel the effects of freezing temperatures. To prevent your pipes from freezing, you can insulate any piping that is exposed by surrounding them with foam insulation or heating tape to keep them warm. Also, be sure to cover any outside faucets or spouts with a cover or insulation/tape as well and drain your hoses and move them indoors. Of course, the most important tip of all when it comes to plumbing is to turn your water off at the first warning of freezing temperatures.

In order for your fireplace to keep you warm during the winter, it needs to be in tip-top shape. Scheduling a routine inspection and cleaning will get your fireplace ready for colder weather and give you a chance to repair any issues prior to using it.

Insulation can make a huge difference in the overall warmth of your home. Adding insulation to your attic, crawl space, hot water heater and exterior outlets is an inexpensive way to winterize your home.

Prevent leaks around windows and doors by adding caulking or weather-stripping. If the air is leaking in these spots, your HVAC system will be working overtime to do its job and you will not feel as though you are warm enough throughout winter.

Roof Preparation

Your roof also helps keep the warm air inside. Inspect your roof for any missing or damaged shingles, leaks near chimneys, etc. Also be sure to clean the gutters as they are sure to fill up quickly with the leaves and other debris associated with winter.

HVAC System

Without your HVAC system, you certainly wouldn’t be able to have any warmth in your home. Routine maintenance is the best possible tip you can have to be sure your HVAC system is in working order. Schedule a time for your technician to come out and complete an inspection and workup prior to the winter months so you have time to get your system in its best working condition.
